Ferla and its “Digital Twin” to Tackle Climate Change
How can even a small municipality prepare for heatwaves, droughts, and floods before they happen? The answer comes from Ferla, Sicily, which, thanks to the URWAN (Urban Regenerative Water Avant-garde(N)) project, is at the forefront of climate planning. Through the collaboration between SVI.MED. and the company Kassandra, an innovative Integrated Decision Support System (IDSS) has been developed, transforming complex data into operational tools for the administration and its citizens.

The “Green Wall” is expanding: new sensors and a rain garden, courtesy of NICE and CARDIMED
Ferla’s Green Wall is not a monument, but a living piece of infrastructure that is growing and continues to attract European projects. Thanks to the fellowship from the Horizon Europe NICE project, which concluded in May 2026, the Wall2Water system at the ‘Valle dell’Anapo’ Institute – which treats greywater from the school’s washbasins and reuses it in the toilets – has been upgraded in three ways: a rain garden, an advanced monitoring system and the refurbishment of the existing plant.

URWAN: a roadmap and ready-to-use tools for Mediterranean cities
Heatwaves, extreme droughts, sudden downpours on impervious roads: Mediterranean cities are on the front line of the climate crisis. The European URWAN project – Urban Regenerative Water Avant-garde(N) – co-funded by the Interreg Euro-MED programme and coordinated by ANCI Lazio with eight partners from six countries, demonstrate that integrating Nature-based Solutions into urban regeneration is possible, replicable and measurable.

Wall2Water: NAWAMED’s Innovative Living Green Wall Piloted in Tunisia
NAWAMED’s Wall2Water pilot in Tunisia introduces a Living Green Wall to treat and reuse greywater from student residences. Installed by CERTE and IRIDRA, the system purifies water for toilet flushing while enhancing urban biodiversity, reducing pollution, and cooling the environment. This space-efficient, nature-based solution offers a scalable model for sustainable water management in cities facing water scarcity.
NAWAMED presents water management pilots implemented in Jordan
The EU-funded NAWAMED project showcases two innovative pilot installations in Jordan for the treatment and reuse of greywater through Nature-Based Solutions (NbS). At the University of Jordan’s Al-Zahra’a Dormitory, a Green Facade system treats greywater from showers and washbasins, while in Zain Park (Jerash), planted ponds filter rainwater and greywater for irrigation use. These eco-friendly, visually appealing systems offer a practical response to water scarcity, especially in arid climates, promoting sustainability in urban environments.
Constructed Wetlands for Greywater Reuse in Lebanon
In Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, NAWAMED and the American University of Beirut have implemented two Constructed Wetlands at the AREC campus to sustainably treat greywater from dormitories and administrative buildings. These nature-based systems use wetland plants and microorganisms to purify water, which is then reused for irrigation. The project offers a cost-effective, eco-friendly solution to water scarcity and serves as a model for future sustainable water initiatives in the region.
NAWAMED introduces cutting-edge solutions for greywater treatment in Lebanon
As part of the NAWAMED project, the American University of Beirut has installed two green wall systems—Living Walls and Green Facades—at Jewett Hall to treat greywater for toilet reuse, while enhancing aesthetics and energy efficiency. Additionally, AUB has introduced a portable wetland designed by IRIDRA, offering a mobile greywater treatment solution ideal for refugee camps and off-grid areas. These nature-based systems highlight AUB’s role in advancing sustainable, adaptable water management in Lebanon and beyond.
